Otter Actually, Otter reminds me of a local musher I know. Both are very pretty, athletic, long legged, and a bit eccentric. In Otter’s case, she simply doesn’t like to be hugged. Scratching is good. In fact it’s great. And she has no problems with kissing (giving or receiving). But she’ll pull away if you try and hug her. And she won’t, under any circumstance, take a treat from your hand. She’ll either catch it out of the air or take it from the ground. With all this, Otter may be the smoothest dog I own. A bunch of dogs are faster, but she does everything with incredible ease and is particularly adept at transitioning between a trot and a lope. As a nine year old, Otter still easily made my Iditarod team. Last year, we ran a 40 mile per day heat based race which required some high end speed and a ten year old Otter was only first alternate. Of course, she did beat out her daughter for that position. click here for a glossary of Mushing Terms |
